Divorce Proceeding

Kquanasia got out of the hospital bed and peeked out the curtain. The emergency room was in full swing. She noticed a police officer at the nurse’s station speaking to one of the nurses’. The two security guards were busy trying to get a few street bums out of the emergency room. Just as she was about to step out the curtain and slip out of the emergency room she seen the nurse rise and began leading the cop back in her direction.

She looked around frantically. She was going to jump in the bed and pretend to be asleep, but at the last moment she slipped beneath the curtain into the next patient’s area. The old man in the bed looked at her in surprise as she heard the nurse draw back the curtain to her treatment area.

She quickly removed the paper gown they had fitted her with and pressed an index finger to her lips; that had curled into a smile. The old man’s eyes bulged excitement.

Kquanasia heard the nurse tell the cop she must have been taken upstairs to trauma. She listened as their footsteps went away and felt a sense of relief sweep over her. She retrieved the paper gown, put it on and kissed the old man before walking from behind the curtain. She headed around the back of the emergency room and grabbed a pair of old scrubs from a laundry cart before walking out into a hallway.

She spotted the bathroom and quickly made her way to it. She went inside and put on the scrubs in one of the stalls. When she came out she looked at herself in the mirror and ran some warm water over her face and hair. She went back in the stall and flushed the paper gown down the toilet before exiting the bathroom and looking for an exit out the hospital.

Once she was out the hospital and on the streets she began to look for a pay phone. She got the operator and called Ali collect. He answered and accepted. She could hear the concern in his voice when he asked what was wrong. She smiled before turning on the charm.

“A bad client. You Denver boys are rough. Wanted me to play bad nurse but only had some scrubs. He kicked me out. The life of a woman a few coins short.”

“Where are you? I’m coming to get you now.” He said.

“Like I said he was a doctor. I’m at Presbyterian St. Luke’s.”

“I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.”

“Hurry I’m ready to play the damsel in distress.”

“I don’t mind the villain.”

She hung up the phone and wandered back toward the east end of the hospital grounds and sat on a bench. She knew Ali would find her. She had never really noticed all the roles she had played and mastered until now; when her life depended on it.

Aruji walked out into the living area where his father sat. He was wearing one of the hand woven robes he sometimes wore around their palace in Ghana.
